Having a dog leash is just as important as having a collar because you can’t take your dog on a walk without having a leash to control and hold the dog. Leashes prevent your dog from running off or getting lost in crowded areas.
There are several dog leashes with different concepts and designs, and here are some of them.
Retractable Leashes
The retractable leash will allow your dog to walk as far as thirty feet away from the portable plastic handle you’re holding. The handle has a mechanism allowing you to release and withdraw the leash as required.
The retractable leash is not effective in a controlled surrounding because the functionality doesn’t ensure a fast, precise response. This ineffectiveness make you lose your control, and this can be dangerous.
Slip Leads for Dogs
Slip leads can function as a collar and a leash and are frequently called training leads. They resemble regular leashes, but a small metal ring is at their ends. The leash is easy to put on and off your dog. You merely have to pull the strap through the ring to make a larger loop that slips over your dog’s neck.
When placing the slip leads, ensure they recline high on your dog’s neck towards its ears to prevent coughing or choking. This area is also more sensitive to your dog and will prevent it from pulling hard when you walk your dog. It is a good choice for training your dog but might not be the best for long-term use.
Martingale Leashes
The martingale leash is similar to the slip lead, and it functions as both a lead and a collar. It looks exactly like a lead attached to a collar, but it has additional adjustability. This leash is an excellent choice for dogs with thick necks and smaller heads, like greyhounds, because it tightens if the dog tries to move out of the collar.
Dog owners do not often use martingale leashes, but they’re helpful if your dog tends to pull a lot. The leash also easily and quickly comes off and on your dog, making it a popular option to hang on the back door for regular, brief potty walks.
Harness Lead Dog Leashes
Harness leads include a harness and a leash made from one rope in its design. It will tighten around your dog’s chest area or body when it jumps up or pulls forward. Dog owners use this leash to teach their dogs not to jump.
This action will help alleviate pressure on the trachea but ensure you read the manufacturer’s instructions to prevent misuse or injury. But, pressure on your dog’s chest by the harness lead may also make your dog pull harder against the harness leash.
Gentle Leader Leash
Although it appears more like a collar than a lead, the gentle leader leash can function adequately as a lead. The head collar, also called the Haltis or Gentle leader, loops around your dog’s muzzle, resembling a horse rein.
The idea is that when you fit the gentle leader over the dog’s muzzle, and your dog starts to pull, the nose loop will yank your dog’s head toward you, stopping the tugging and diverting its attention to you. But dogs don’t like this leash, and it has a bizarre look.
